One Day Sunday: The Family of God
The Family of God: Who is My Family?
Phil McMillan, Convoy of Hope, One Day to Feed the World
19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. 20Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. Ephesians 2:19-20 NLT
'Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. ' John 15:13
'Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!”' Matthew 12:48-50
How do you define family?
Three Realities about the Family of God:
THE FAMILY OF GOD IS WHERE WE FIND OUR IDENTITY.
'But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” ' Galatians 4:4-6 ESV
'Father to the fatherless, defender of widows— this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy. But he makes the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land. ' Psalms 68:5-6 NLT
In a healthy family, we find strength.
THE FAMILY OF GOD GROWS AROUND THE DINNER TABLE.
The dinner table is significant. The ministry of Jesus began and ended at the table. (The wedding at Cana; The Last Supper)
Why is the table significant?
THE DINNER TABLE IS WHERE THE IMAGE OF GOD IS SEEN AND THE LOVE OF GOD IS FELT.
'As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. .. ' Luke 24:30-31
SACRIFICIAL GIVING IS HOW THE FAMILY OF GOD IS EXPANDED.
You wouldn’t be where you are unless someone sacrificed.
We don’t give to get. We give to grow.
